How Do Auditions Work?

At Lower Lights Theatre Company, youth production auditions are open to any child ages 8–18. No role is precast. Our motto for auditions is: “You have one minute to shine.”

We encourage performers to prepare a one-minute song that showcases both vocal strength and acting performance. For this production, expressiveness, storytelling, and character portrayal are just as important—if not more—than pure vocal ability.

Singing Audition Details

Performers must prepare a one-minute musical theater song that highlights both performance and vocal skill.

Important song guidelines:

• Songs from A Year with Frog and Toad are not allowed.

• Please avoid pop songs.

We are looking for selections from the musical theatre repertoire, or musical standards that match the tone of Frog and Toad—something character-driven, whimsical, gentle, or expressive.

• Performers must bring a Bluetooth-enabled device (like a phone or tablet).

• Their song track must be a karaoke/instrumental version with no backing vocals.

• The track should be queued up and ready for their audition.

• A Bluetooth speaker will be provided.

We are looking not just for how well you sing, but for how well you tell a story and embody a character through your song.

Tips for a Strong Audition

• Choose a song that fits your voice and personality.

• Rehearse your performance with energy, clarity, and character.

• Practice using your karaoke track in advance.

• Be respectful, prepared, and open to direction throughout the process.

• Prepare for callbacks by becoming familiar with the show’s tone, characters, and themes.

Dance Requirement

All performers will learn and perform a short dance routine during the audition process.

The audition dance video will be available online starting July 1.

Performers are expected to learn the dance in advance and be ready to perform it as part of the audition.

Auditioning for Lead Roles (Frog or Toad)

Performers wishing to be considered for the roles of Frog or Toad must have no more than three conflicts listed on their audition form and must be available for daytime performances October 9 and 10.

*Anyone with more than three rehearsal conflicts will not be eligible for these leading roles.*

Audition Process Overview

1. Check in with a show coordinator at the sign-in area.

2. Performers (and parents wishing to watch) are brought into the audition room in groups of 10.

3. Each student:

• Introduces themselves and their song

• Performs their audition solo

• Takes a seat to observe the rest of their group

4. After all 10 performers have sung, they will review the dance routine.

5. The group is then split into smaller sections to perform the dance in front of the artistic team.

6. Afterward, each student will receive a slip indicating:

• Either that they are released from auditions, or

• That they are invited to callbacks on Saturday afternoon

Callbacks are closed—only the artistic team may attend.

What to Bring and Wear

• A printed 8” x 10” color headshot

• A theatrical résumé

• A Bluetooth-enabled device with your karaoke track ready to play

• Clothes that are comfortable for dancing and appropriate for performance

FAQ

Does auditioning guarantee a role?

While we aim to include as many performers as possible, each production has a limited cast size. Many factors go into casting, including:

• Characterization

• Vocal and performance strength

• Rehearsal availability

• Stage presence

• Director’s vision and ensemble balance

How many performers will be cast in the show?

We expect to cast between 30-40 performers for this show.

Can I submit a video audition?

Yes, but you must get prior approval from the show coordinator. Video auditions must be submitted via a private YouTube link before the first night of auditions.

Where do I find the audition forms?

Attendance & Conflicts

All absences must be listed in advance on the Audition Form. Once casting is finalized, additional absences may result in removal from the cast. This includes:

• Missing more than two rehearsals

• Leaving rehearsal early without permission

• Missing required events such as Super Saturday, dress/tech rehearsals, or performances

If cast, performers must attend all scheduled rehearsals unless excused by the Artistic Director. Any unapproved absence after casting may result in being dropped from the production.
